This Saturday, after many workouts and much practice, the Gator football season will start. Each player has trained and prepared and lived a radical lifestyle in order to get the most out of each game and give each fan a reason to celebrate and the university a reason to make a lot of money. The players disciplined themselves to get strong and attain peak physical condition. After the game is over, the campus will be transformed under mounds of beverage containers.
As Christians we can learn much from the dedication of these athletes and their discipline for the sake of the game. Paul wrote to Timothy, “...for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”—1 Timothy 4:8 NASB
Can you imagine how the U.F. campus would be transformed if we were a church full of Christians who disciplined themselves for the purpose of godliness...if we lived radically for the sake of the gospel, and if we invested the same amount of time and money into making disciples that Gator fans invest into following Gator football? People’s lives would be radically transformed and reborn in Jesus Christ. The lost on campus would find real life in Jesus and hope for the future. The Church would be healthy and living out its purpose. Let’s “...discipline [ourselves] for the purpose of godliness (v. 7).”
